The annual Auckland Rugby Referees versus Auckland Rugby League Referees was played on Sunday February 26th February at the Redwood Park Golf Club in Swanson. For the first time in a while the League Referees took out the honours and the Stableford Trophy by a resounding 214 points to 198 – some would say it was a hiding. In saying that the day was a complete success with a total of 35 golfers turning out – the weather was great and the golf course was in great condition.
For the rugby contingent, Mark Thompson took out the Bill Killip Cup, awarded for the best Nett score, for the second successive year and best stableford points were to Dave Ferguson with 36 and wife, Janice, coming in a close second with 34.
Closest to the pin on the 8th green for rugby was Pete Willis and the most golf prize was awarded to Jaimin Benton, which just goes to show that it doesn’t matter your skill level, you’ll come out with something at the end.
Everyone who participated walked away with something from the prize table and each team was supplied with a platter of food at the prize giving as well as a complimentary sausage sizzle being made available just by the 14th green (Dave Ferguson’s daughter).
Many thanks to Dave Ferguson and family who organised this event, the Redwood Park Golf Club for hosting the day, Pete Willis who took on the job of being the scorer and Stu Mather, ARU Board member who attended the day.
Special thanks must go the Rural News Group, who supplied many of the prizes and allowed Dave time to work organising this even plus all the others that supplied prizes – a big thank you to all involved and to the ladies and gents that turned up to make the day a complete success……………….except for the result.
