Smudge McNeilage

Head Coach - Premier Panel

Having had the experience of refereeing almost 200 premier games, I have now been given the privilege of being Head Coach of our Premier panel.

My objectives this season are to:

  • Gain consistency of rulings & interpretations amongst the Premier panel via their personal coaches,
  • Facilitate the movement into & out of the Premier panel ensuring everyone gets a fair opportunity,
  • Increase my knowledge from active refs,
  • Increase my coaching skills from the talented coaches we have in Auckland (& others from throughout NZ),
  • Pass on any tips, hints or ideas that I have gained in my time in this great game of ours.

Please feel free to discuss issues/ideas with me around the grounds, on Monday nights or via the numbers below. Enjoy & go well.

Roger Drew

Head Coach - Panel B

I have been involved in the ARRA since 1995 achieving representative honours and a Premier centurion.

As the head panel coach my aim is to ensure that every member of the B Panel has an opportunity to be viewed and receive a RIMMS report by our referee coaches. B Panel referees have the greatest involvement & opportunities over a wide range of matches in the Auckland club and secondary school competitions. There are opportunities for our referees to press for recognition over a range of matches, so it is a personal challenge for us all to improve plus offer ongoing assistance to our Premier group.

May I wish you all an enjoyable season and please do not hesitate to contact me.

Rob Ah Kuoi

Head Coach - Panel C

I first started refereeing with ARRA in 1994. In 1996 I shifted to Brisbane where I refereed for two years. I returned to New Zealand in 2003 where I refereed in Hamilton for 3 years and then returned to ARRA in 2007.

My aim for Panel C is to help as many referees to achieve their goals for 2011. Some might want to aim for higher honours, or just to improve their refereeing. I encourage all Panel C referees to be actively involved by attending our meetings, Assistant Refereeing and talking to other referees in our Association.

May I wish you all a successful season and please do not hesitate to contact me.

John Ripley

Head Coach - JRC and Secondary School Panel

I started refereeing in the Bay of Islands Association (a sub-association of Northland) in 1961 and moved to Auckland in 1962, refereeing fixtures up to Senior Reserve (now Premier Reserve) and attained a ranking of No.55 out of 390 running referees under the ladder system that operated then. In 1978 I took up a career as a professional ambulance officer which precluded refereeing. In 1995 I rejoined Auckland RRA as a coach during which time I was convener of the 1st year & JRC coaching group for a year and later Acting Head Panel Coach of the C Panel for one season.

My plan for 2012 is to build on the work Jon Maud has started to identify referees that can progress quickly into the higher grades while they still develop a solid base, and so address the urgent need to maintain our C and B panels at a suitable standard. At the same time we must not lose sight of the fact that rugby is for enjoyment whether we are a referee, coach, player or spectator and that must always be our priority.

With the ever increasing speed of rugby in general we will be encouraging each of you to develop accuracy, pace, speed off the mark, and timely arrival at the breakdown so that you rule on the first infringement not the second.

I am also aware that some referees do not desire to progress to higher grades and have already found the level at which they enjoy operating in JRC. They will receive coaching aimed at maximising that enjoyment.

All the best for the season.

Bill Price

Head Coach - First Year Panel

I have been involved in refereeing for 41 years and for 33 of these have been working with the first year referees.

As the head panel coach my aim is to teach you law knowledge and coach field techniques that will enhance your refereeing skills, give you confidence and in particular enjoyment of being a vital participant in the game of rugby. My second aim is to work with a group of new referees who can advance and become valued members of our Association.

I wish you an enjoyable and rewarding season. You can contact me on:
