The 2016 Auckland Rugby Union Awards were held at Eden Park last night, recognising the efforts of teams, players, coaches and volunteers across the club and representative season.
Steven Piacun was named the Club Referee of the Year, as voted by the premier coaches after a superb premier season.
Smudge McNeilage Referee Manager had this to say on Steve’s efforts.
“What a stunning effort from a guy who was going to retire midway through the season his form on and off the field dictated that retiring would have been a silly idea. Steve went on to be awarded the semi-final of the Gallaher shield and, as all knew, did a wonderful job. Words cannot describe the huge impact Steve has off the field on the premier squad and all others within the association, I cannot think of a more deserved winner of the award.”
Also on the night,
Stefan Crooks, of our principle sponsor Westie Pies also picked up the Barrie Connell Memorial. Crooks’ was rewarded for his efforts for the past four years as Chairman of Suburbs as well as recognising his work to engage the local community and grow the club.
